Chamber of Commerce Attacking Legal System through Radio Ads

In this country, we all have the right to hold another person or party, or even corporation responsible for their acts of negligence, malpractice and other cases of harm. Recently, the Chamber of Commerce has entered the radio advertisement arena in an attempt to protect its high standing members from these lawsuits and claims of negligence. They claim that this is to protect people from meaningless lawsuits, but these ad campaigns are supported by the same people that the Chamber of Commerce is trying to protect, including oil, tobacco, and insurance companies. It seems to like the Chamber of Commerce does not really care about proper care and practices for individuals and Americans, it seems like they care more about protecting their highest paying and loyal supporters. Once again money is put before rights and in this country people have fought for those rights and they deserve the chance to exercise them when the situation calls for it. People’s rights and needs should come first before money, but once again, this is not the case. If people listen to the ads of the Chamber of Commerce than people will not be able to sue for neglect or abuse of a loved one in a nursing home, or a injury due to a product defect or the injuries that can error due to improper label of products. If the members of the Chamber of Commerce were injured due to malpractice they would want to have the right to sue, so other people deserve this right as well.

Bathtub Safety Tips that may save Your Child’s Life

Every summer parents and guardians sit by the pool and watch over their children as they swim because they are worried about the possibility of drowning. Not many of us consider that the same thing can happen indoors in bathtubs, bath seats and even buckets every year. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that in 2003-2005, about ninety children younger than five years old drowned in bathtubs, bath seats, buckets, pails, and other landscaping and yard products.  In 2005-2007 there was an average of thirty-nine submersion incidents with the same products involving children less than two years of age. It is important that we remember to always supervise our children in and outdoors while they are around or in these products. Some safety tips recommended by CPSC for parents and caregivers include:

  • Never leave your child alone even for a second while they are near or around water.
  • When in a bathtub always make sure the child is within arm’s reach or take them with you if you leave.
  • Do not let another child watch a younger child around a bathtub or other sources of water.
  • Do not leave buckets with water unattended even if it is a small amount of water.
  • Take a CPR class which can help save children’s lives.

It is important that we remember to watch our child the best we can at all times and follow all safety advice and recommendations possible. These things may just help us to save the life of our child or other children.

Yasmin: Are the Benefits worth the Serious Risks?

There have been many concerns and about the birth control pill Yasmin or Yaz.  Reports claim that it has many other benefits in addition to helping to prevent pregnancy.  Those benefits include claims that it helps with the symptoms of PMDD or premenstrual dysphoric disorder, helps with moderate acne and has been effective for Premenstrual Disorder or PMS, ovarian cysts, and ovarian cancer. What Yaz’s commercials and website apparently failed to disclose and understated were the serious potential side effects that can occure with this birth control pill. These risks and potential side effects include: blood clots, stroke, heart attack, weight gain, depression, and even in some very severe cases death.  Were these downplayed risks really worth the overstated benefits of taking Yaz?  The drugs manufacturer, Bayer clearly had its own bottom line in mind when it marketed this drug in the way it did and failed to inform people of the seriousness of the risks. Thankfully, Bayer is now paying the price by having new FDA regulations and recalls. So, the next time you see a Yaz commercial or information, make sure you consider whether the real benefits are really worth all the real risks.

Paula Deen’s Cookware sold on QVC may be great looking on TV but is it safe to use?

Many people know about Paula Deen’s cooking show and also the channel on TV QVC which sells various products to consumers. This person and this channel are very popular and well known by many people, so it may come as a shock that on October 2, 2009, Paula Deen’s Cast Iron Cookware was recalled by the U.S. Product Safety Commission due to possible burn and laceration hazards. This cookware can crack or shatter causing consumers to get burns or lacerations while using the cookware. QVC and Meyer Trading have reported 79 reports of the cookware shattering or cracking while being heated. This includes one consumer who reported a minor burn injury to their arm. This recall is on Paula Deen’s 11 inch cast iron grill pans and griddles. The item numbers are K14984, K11970, and K135024. The products are black and have Paula Deen logo and size engraved on the bottom. There was no other Paula Deen cookware involved in this specific recall. These items were sold through QVC television show, online at QVC.com and through QVC retail stores between October 2007 and July 2009. Consumers should stop using this cookware right away and contact QVC for a full refund.

Yaz Birth Control Concerns Continue

The birth control pill Yaz that once was all over commercials and online has being not only an effective form of birth control but also claimed to help with the symptoms of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD has now made the news because of serious side effects and possible false claims. Yaz contains drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. These levels of hormones have been known to cause some serious side effects that the Yaz commercials did not really seem to tell consumers enough about. Bayer’s company intentions were good and the marketing was great, but has it really been worth all the concern and controversy over the Yaz birth control pill now? Some consumers on Yaz are now scared or afraid to take it based on reports they have read or seen. Some people that are taking it now even say that it did not help them with their PDD symptoms as much as the ads and commercials claimed it would. Marketing is important and money is important, but consumer’s right to accurate information and proper warnings should always come first. Without a consumer’s trust, there is no product to sell. I believe Bayer has to regain their trust in many consumers that trusted the Yaz ads and commercials. They have a long way to go before they do.

Death Being Investigated of Woman who Took Yaz Birth Control

The Bayer AG company in Germany is having its Yaz Pill investigated by the Swiss Health regulator has part of the reason a woman may have died. The woman was said to die from the effects of a pulmonary embolism and had been taking the pill for ten months. These types of problems are the rare but serious side effects of taking hormone-based contraceptives such as Yaz. It is true that just because this one woman may have died due in part as a result of Yaz, that not all woman are at risk by taking Yaz. This story though among others makes people start to wonder why the Bayer Company tried to cover up the serious side effects of this pill. Is it because money truly talks and Yaz is a huge money maker for Bayer? Or is it because all birth control pills have their risks so they did not see the need to mention them? Or finally is it because they really did not think the risks of this Yaz Birth Control pill were that serious? Whatever the case, people should know all the risks of any medicine they take, big or small, no matter how good the medicine may be or how much money the company may make. Consumers have the right to know what they are consuming.

Toyota Owners: Check your Floor Mats. It Could Save Your Life

Many of you might be wondering why checking your floor mats could save your life. After all the idea of a floor mat being dangerous seems a bit silly at first. That however, was not the case for a family driving on a California highway with a stuck accelerator and no brakes. This is what happened to passengers in San Diego in August and has now promoted Toyota to recall 3.8 million vehicles the biggest U.S. recall due to floor mat hazard. Apparently the removable floor mats found in many Toyota vehicles have the potential to cause accelerators to get stuck, leading to crashes. Toyota is working with the National Highway Safety Administration to fix the problem and that for now owners should remove the floor mats and not replace them until the problem is fixed. If the floor mat is under the pedal, this may lead to the accelerator getting stuck and lead to possible car crashes and injuries. So check those mats and stay safe!

Is that Bed your Child is sleeping in Safe Enough?

Products get recalled everyday due to broken or breaking pieces, but we trust the products that we buy to keep us safe and to protect us. As parents we also expect the bed we tuck our kids into to be safe and to protect them. The sad truth is that may not always be the case.

On Wednesday September 23, 2009, the U.S. Product Safety Commission recalled Bunk Beds due to collapse and fall hazards.  They are wooden bunk beds and about 20,000 of them are being recalled due to these hazards.  The bunk bed mattress support slats can break possibly causing the bed to collapse and the consumer to fall. Big Lots Inc received fourteen reports of the supports cracking or breaking and four reported minor injuries. The defective products being recalled are wooden bunk beds with a three step ladder.  Their model numbers are: WP 91081 and WP 91082. These were sold at Big Lots stores from May 2008 until February 2009. The defective product should stop being used immediately and be reported to Big Lots for a free repair kit.

Film about Health Care Reform and What Went So Wrong

There has been so much debate about health care reform, that now there is even a film about it. This film will be called Money Driven Medicine and is produced by Alex Gibney and is based on a book also called Money-Drive Medicine by Maggie Mahar. This film will show that the U.S. has spent more on health care when it becomes an emergency situation and less money on how to prevent diseases and sicknesses in the first place. It will talk about how we might receive more medical care, but not necessarily better medical care. Based on how the Health Care reform debate is going on now, this may be right. This country has many resources and all the technology for good medical care, but it seems as though we wait to use it until patients come in seriously ill with chronic problems or illness. If we spent more time preventing the abuse and injuries going on in nursing homes, or with consumer products, or even with driving safety than maybe we would not have to spend so much about expensive medicines and technology and there may not be as many medical malpractice lawsuits. So instead of focusing on more care, maybe the debate needs to focus on ways to prevent injuries, abuse, and sicknesses in the first place. If this country did that, maybe we could save enough money to get everyone health care and proper medical care. We need to focus more on patients and less on expensive medicines and equipment and how to cut costs. Without patients to care for, we won’t need all that, so patients need to come first. They should always be the first concern.
